Beware of UEI Nevo
products sold on the internet, from unauthorized sources.
Buyers from these sources will not receive any warrant nor will
you be able to get the unit serviced. UEI will simply refer you
to your authorized dealer. If you do not have one, you will
end up with a very expensive paperweight. We are an authorized
dealer and a certified Nevo SL installer.
Talk about a slick
remote.... Our best seller and for
very good reasons! If you don't know, UEI is the keeper of
all-IR-codes in the world. Almost every manufacturer goes to UEI
to get codes for their OEM remotes and I do mean everyone! So,
they have developed their own operating system for remotes,
called Nevo.
Nevo was originally developed for the PDA
market, mostly for the Compaq (HP) IPAQ. Nevo was bundled free
with all IPAQ's and they tried to entice the PDA owners to use
their PDA as a remote controller. It did ok in the marketplace and UEI learned
a great deal about what a great remote looks and functions like.
With that said, UEI has developed the
ultimate remote. Why not, they have all of the codes, for just
about every piece of AV equipment, every produced. Why not take
advantage of their strength? The Nevo SL was born!
As you can see from the pictures, this is a fabulous form factor; sleek, stylish, with
great one-handed style. Even the charging station is sexy! It
includes a beautiful color touchscreen, clear and brightly
back-lit.
Exceptional
Hardbuttons
Exceptional design work went into the
hardbuttons. There are 17 on the face of the remote. Very nicely
sculptured, matte silver finish and the key labels all light up.
The 4 hardbuttons under the screen, do not have labels on the
actual button. Their labels are on the very bottom of the
touchscreen. Most importantly, the
location of the hardbuttons is very central and when resting
the Nevo SL in the fingers or palm of your hand, the average
person can use their thumb to navigate to all of the
hardbuttons. This is what we mean by the "return" of the
one-handed remote.

There are 3 buttons on the sides of the
Nevo SL. On the right side there is a button to turn the
backlight on and off and the hardbutton lighting. The Nevo
"sleeps" after a period of time but it does not turn off the
entire remote, only the lighting, in
support of the Wi-Fi capabilities. Touching the screen,
pressing any hardbutton or pressing the backlight button,
will revive the unit. There is not a pick-up sensor in the
Nevo SL.
Also on the right side of the Nevo SL is
a very slick scroll dial, which is spring-loaded and is used
to scroll through pages, within any Device. It is easy to
use and it moves nicely in and up and down motion. Each one
motion can advance a page or go back a page. This is very
handy when scrolling through multiple pages on the unit. It
has nice feedback and it easier to use than most touchscreen
scroll techniques.
There is another nice feature on the
touchscreen, which supports page scrolling. There is a
simple yet elegant scroll bar indicator near the bottom of
the screen, which gives a graphical view of what page you
are on and if there are pages to the left and right of the
indicator. In addition, the blue indicator is automatically
scaled, smaller or larger, depending on the number of pages.
Once you understand this neat feature, you can move around
very quickly.
Color Touchscreen
The Nevo SL employs a 3.5" x 2 1/4" LCD
screen, formatted for 240 pixels x 300 pixels, TFT design,
with 65,000 colors. It is ideal for navigating between
panels, per different devices. With the combined hard
buttons and the screen, it can be customized to any level
the user would like.
Included Software
Included with the Nevo SL is a collection
of easy-to-install, but powerful and robust-featured Windows
applications;
NevoStudio
Is a powerful and very robust
design tool for creating how you want the remote to look and
function. In this application you have ultimate control over
all of the design aspects, including icons, color, text,
page views, etc. You can choose your equipment from the
large database of built in IR codes or learn elusive
functions from your original OEM remotes. There is even a
feature to go online and do a more detailed “model-based”
lookup for most any piece equipment.

Nevo Media
Server
This is the application which
monitors selected folders on your PC, to find, catalog and
manage music, pictures or even streaming video.
The current software product is basically
the first production release but so far, it is solid and
very functional. Sure, it needs a few features here and
there but definitely a sturdy and feature-rich version. At
CEDIA we meet with several Nevo execs and they have promised
continually improvements to both firmware and the Nevo
Studio software.
Media
Convergence - The Nevo SL and the Nevo Link
Home media convergence is
certainly the buzz phrase for 2006 and beyond. There are
huge efforts underway by some significant Audio-Video and
computer manufacturers, to make the whole house ready to get
media anywhere, anytime, "on-demand. Media is typically
defined as music, pictures and video but certainly not
limited to this current group of suspects. Could open the
door for a lot more of those "long-promised" technologies,
like the smart refrigerator, etc.
The Nevo SL is a wireless (Wi-Fi) capable
remote control. Coupled with the NevoLink, which is a small,
attractive Wi-Fi receiver, the pair manages mp3's audio
tracks to be viewed and selected from the Nevo color screen,
from any PC in your home.
Let’s look at this in more detail. Let’s
say you have a Windows PC in your family room which has a
growing collection of mp3’s, from many different sources;
web downloads, ripped cd’s, exchanges from friends, etc.
The Nevo SL, with a single NevoLink, when
attached to a home wireless or wired network, would allow
you to display all of the mp3’s “metadata” (short for mp3
title, artist, album name, genre, etc.), on the Nevo SL
screen. You can quickly sort by any of the data elements, to
view the music you are searching for, then select and play a
track, an entire CD or any play list you might care to
create. However, unless that particular PC is attached to
your home theater components, you can only play the music
through the PC speaker system. If it is connected to your
home theater, you can make use of your home theater as the
playback source.
Level One
Integration
Ok, so you say your target PC is
not connected to your home theater. How can I get the music
to play from my stereo or surround receiver?
Continuing on the theme of the “connected
home”, you can add a relatively inexpensive “music renderer”
like the DLink DSM-320. This is another wireless device
which looks like a piece of audio gear and would typically
be housed with your audio gear. It can work wirelessly or
can be wired to any RJ-45 Cat 5 connection, if you so happen
to have one in your home theater area.
With this device, the NevoLink and your
Nevo SL, you can direct the music to be played through your
normal home theater and the Nevo can control of all the
aspects of your entire home theater as well as managing and
selecting the mp3 audio, which remains stored on your PC.
You also have a variety of setup options
within the Nevo SL Media Server software, to control your
home theater gear via Wi-Fi or via typical remote, IR
signals or any combination of both.
Level Two
Integration
If you have a Home Theater PC which is
already connected to a home theater, then you can skip the
DLink device and you can accomplish all of the above with
just the NevoLink and the Nevo SL. As in the above
integration, you can choose to control your home theater
equipment via IR signal, Wi-Fi signals or any combination of
both.
Wi-Fi
control versus IR Control
In the above integrations, you
notice we said you can control your home theater via Wi-Fi
or IR signal, or both. This is one of the interesting
flexibilities of the Nevo SL system.
In any of the integrations above, you
could leave the NevoLink attached near the target PC and you
can choose the mp3’s to view and play via Wi-Fi and control
your home theater (while in IR range of your home theater
equipment), via traditional IR commands.
Or, you could locate the NevoLink with
your home theater gear, attached to your home network. The
NevoLink can then control all of you home theater equipment
via Wi-Fi, anywhere with your home. This means you could
control not only the mp3’s but also volume and all of the
rest of the attributes of your home theater, from just about
anywhere in your home. There may be some minor range
limitations in really large, multi-floor homes but we were
successful testing from our backyard, while listening
through the outside speakers and controlling all of the
aspects of the audio receiver.
It is using the first rev of the
software and firmware but so far, it is solid and very functional.
Sure, it needs a few features here and there but definitely a sturdy
and feature-rich version. At CEDIA we met with several Nevo
execs and they have promised continually improvements to both
firmware and the Nevo Studio software
